running on empty
i really dont appreciate the representation of asemu in this piece. while i appreciate that getting mothers the money to buy food for their children is essential, i guess i resent that the only solution mentioned is for ‘rich’ countries to give more money. and there was no real look at what were the structural reasons for these women’s poverty. or how to dismantle the structural violence of poverty. charity is not the answer.
also found it interesting that the welsh lady talked about worrying about the effect of giving ‘junk’ food to her children. but it was obvious that that was the only type of food that was affordable and accessible.
ive been really wanting to talk about food and poverty and women of color lately. there is some of that on vegans of color.
i personally understand that eating meat is a survival issue sometimes for some of us. i dont need animal products to be healthy. but i did when i was pregnant. and what is our response as vegans to those because of interlocking reasons do need animal products for their survival and healthy growth?
which of course takes us completely off the topic of two mothers struggle to survive on a pittance.

I am in support of a Universal Grameen Bank model, where women (the main recipients of Grameen microloans) are empowered to create their own opportunities to feed, clothe, and otherwise provide for their families.
