precious

this is the trailer for the movie : precious.  based off the incredible novel by sapphire: push.

if you have not read push.  please go find a copy and read it.  it is a short novel that blew my mind.  for me it put down in searing language what i had seen and heard around me growing up but could not find the language to explain to others.  it connects so tightly to what i have been talking about more and more which is the ways that race and gender and poverty and other oppressive structures interlock and bust holes into our very sense of self.  the ways that rape and other forms of violence become so prevalant as a means for others to make sure that we do not know who we are and bust holes into us so that we believe that we are nothing except what we are told we are and we are told we are nothing.

i dont know how the movie is going  to be (oprah and tyler perry?…ummm….) but this is one of my favorite books of all time…so go read it…please.

can i say i’m already skeptical of the skinny light skinned girls who care about precious?! We should have QBG fieldtrips to go see this and be prepared to discuss after we see it!

u know… i’m not even Black… and i don’t know if i could emotionally handle watching it… most definitely not in a public theatre… just the preview touches so much, i can barely breathe writing this. but um, yeah, to moya’s point… really… u couldn’t find ANY other BLACK women to be the “good”/loving/caring/helping women? really? i need to go find the book… have trip planned to library on Saturday, i guess now i know what i’m looking for.

i know right? was that mariah carey? it does seem to remind me of that mad tv sketch that summer had up on fb. but instead of it being ‘nice white lady’ it is ‘nice light lady’. so it will be interesting to see how ‘black black’ (as alice walker refers to me) women are portrayed in this film. do any black black women love precious? do only skinny girls love precious?
definitely worth a field trip. and a discussion.
and i feel u aaminah i get all teary watching it too. the book does that too you. seriously. and i am wondering how much of the sexual abuse will be shown in the film? in the book the description of the sexual abuse by the mom’s boyfriends were the moments when i really had to just put the book down. just saying**trigger warnings***
